In Our Times

This series of black and white photos explores moments of peace, something that seems sorely missing in our current state of perpetual crisis - Covid-19, climate change, political upheavals, and social unrest. Taken in some of the most beautiful parks and walkways in Lisbon, my subjects and I try to evoke another place of time and dive in, for a moment, into a wave of stillness. Like Pessoa who captured the city within his words, and Saramago who captured the heart Portugal with his characters, I seek to display the city’s character and the souls who reside here.

My title for this series taken from Ernest Hemingway’s novel , In Our Time. Deeply affected by World War 1 and industrialization, Hemingway took his title from a popular Biblical Hymn, “Peace in Our Time.” Like Hemingway, I think the word peace seems to belong to a much earlier age, but this may only be a illusion each generation holds. But as we continue to face our current challenges, I want to create a visual ode to this idea of peace, even if it’s just held for a moment in the lens of a camera.

Blending the new and the old, I created these photos with using only the ambient light of the park lanterns with my Nikon D850. I printed these photos using the rustic method of acrylic gel lifts and mounted them on paper that had been coated with silver and gold paint.

These photos are about connection negating the need for false perfection.

I owe the style of these photos to the work of Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado and Dorethea Lange, for whom I so greatly admire.
